The Submarine Electronics / Computer Field trains Sailors to operate and maintain high-tech electronics, computers, and digital systems used for submarine combat, sonar, and navigation.
Training covers electricity, electronics, fiber optics, digital systems, and repairs. Standards are high. This field isn’t for everyone. It takes focus, maturity, and a willingness to take on serious responsibility.

What They Do
SECF Sailors specialize in one of three submarine ratings:
- Electronics Technician – Navigation (ETV) – Runs navigation and radar systems. Keeps the sub on course.
- Fire Control Technician (FT) – Works with combat systems, guided missiles, and underwater weapons. Keeps them locked, loaded, and working.
- Sonar Technician – Submarines (STS) – Handles acoustic technology, sonar, and data collection. Finds what’s hiding beneath the surface.
All three jobs revolve around computers and electronics.
