Submarine Electronics/Computer Field (SECF) Jobs: Navy Reserve (2025)

This guide provides helpful information for those considering a career in the Navy Reserve Submarine Electronics/Computer Field (SECF).

The Submarine Electronics / Computer Field trains Sailors to operate and maintain high-tech Submarines run on electronics, computers, and digital systems.

These systems guide navigation, power sonar, and command weapons. Without them, there is no fight. Without them, there is no return.

Demanding Training and High Standards

Training is exacting. It covers electricity, electronics, fiber optics, digital systems, and repair. The bar is set high and does not lower.

This path demands focus. It demands maturity. It demands acceptance of grave responsibility.

Submarine Electronics Careers

SECF Sailors take on one of three specialized submarine ratings.

  • Electronics Technician – Navigation (ETV): ETVs operate radar and navigation systems. They chart the course and hold it steady.
  • Fire Control Technician (FT): FTs manage combat systems, guided missiles, and underwater weapons. They ensure each system is ready to fire and able to strike.
  • Sonar Technician – Submarines (STS): STS Sailors master sonar and acoustic systems. They track, detect, and gather data from the depths.

Mission-Critical Work

Each role centers on electronics and computers. Navigation, weapons, and tracking depend on them. A submarine moves, fights, and survives by these systems alone.
